Our Accomplishments So Far
In its short time of being in operation, PWW has been very successful in addressing the issues of poverty, illiteracy and abuse in underprivileged sections of society. Starting out in January of 2003 we have already made great progress.
Our first project in the slum of Atghara in Kolkata, India, started with only 13 children and now we are being able to help 70. We are now providing the children with two nutritious meals a day instead of one. We have also hired three more teachers to tutor the children.
We also started another poject at Nawabpur in 2007 which also follows similar guidelines as the one at Atghara. It not only takes care of the educational needs of the kids (providing them with school supplies and tutors in the field of computer, art and music)but also pays serious attention to their health and nutrition.
Promise recently launched a self-sustaining project for rural women at Nawabpur in order to uplift the socio-economic conditions of the workers and their families.
Sinko Corporation in the US has commissioned 10,000 pieces of hand knit dish towels to be made from certified organic cotton. Around 60 women in Nawabpur currently are receiving training in knitting these dish-cloths to meet the specifications of the company . Sinko has agreed to do the marketing and expect to sell these towels to retailers in the US. The women are receiving Rs8/finished dish cloth.(a meagre 20 cents approx in US currency)
Promise also has a project for children with special needs in the pipeline and is working hard to make it a success in the near future.
