Selection Criteria
Promise Worldwide, a non-profit organization, focuses on providing education and everyday living needs to girls in low-income families. The typical Promise-sponsored family falls below the poverty-line and can be found living in a slum, earning no more than fifteen dollars a month. These families although not homeless, live in abysmal conditions and offer little hope to their children. Without any help, these children would invariably fall into the same lifestyle as their parents. Promise aims to help these children break this circle of poverty with special emphasis on educating girls.
The paragraphs below broadly describe the criteria used for selection of Promise students. Each selected candidate will be chosen for an initial term of two years at the end of which the student candidate will be evaluated on her attendance and school grades.
Age Group: Girls must be in the age group from 6 years to 15-year olds
Family Income: Total monthly income to be between Rs. 700 to Rs. 1000 ($15 to $20)
Educational qualification: Promise will use certain educational criteria to screen candidates who are already attending school. These criteria will be mostly based on their performance in school and their drive to excel.
Family Interviews: The Executive Director will interview the families of these children to gauge their willingness to support their educational pursuits and their overall choices in life to better themselves through education.
Medical Checkup: Prior to acceptance to the Promise program, students will undergo a preliminary medical check up ( by Dr. Partho Mandal) to assure that they have no communicable diseases.
