Project: Lokar Math
Promise's third project is trying to uplift the lives of the sex worker's children. The location is Lokar Math near Hazra crossing at South Calcutta. Women from the lowest strata of the society have come and settled down here to sell their bodies out of sheer poverty. Apart from the regular inhabitants some two hundred or more women come here regularly from various Kolkata outskirts. Among the regular inhabitants also mostly all of them have migrated from Bankura, Purulia, Birbhum and other districts. Some are migrants from Bangladesh. All these women aspire to a filth free life for their children, with proper education, health and human living conditions.
Lokar Math is no foggy affair where so called educated, cultured and suave women are finding sex business extremely profitable for lump sum amount of money and more comfortable life style. Lokar Math has the class equation covering both of the clients and the customers. They are categorically the same belonging to the most exploited and the poorest of all. Only one glance at their surroundings proves it to be sub human. Even the shelters for stray beasts are more clean and equipped with better sanitation facilities in the developed parts of the world.
The sex trade produces lots of children. In spite of the alarmingly high rate of baby mortality some children miraculously survive life-threatening diseases and infections. With brightly lit faces and a healthy aptitude to grasp hold of anything which will bring them closer to awareness and light, these children are awaiting to get education, medication facilities and to be placed in the proper rehabilitation system.
