There is a small village of Baduria in the district of North 24 Parganas in West Bengal, 70% of the population of which consists of the minority community. The children cannot go to school and are made to work in dangerous conditions. They handle glass without any safety gear and in the process cut their hands and feet. They are exploited and sometimes chained to posts so they don’t run away from their ‘job’, when they really should be going to school and having fun and being children!
Atghara Sanhati Kendra a non-profit organization has been trying to address this issue and has been partially successful in sending some children to school and also helping the older family members to acquire some skills for their livelihoods. Promise Worldwide has taken them under its wings and is funding their projects partially.
