Surjapur Project

Located in Baruipur Block of South Twenty Four Parganas district, West Bengal, the village of Surjapur is home to 277 families and a population of 1,434, of which 12.55% are children aged 0-6. Although the average Sex Ratio of Surjapur is lower than the West Bengal state average at 793, the Child Sex Ratio is 1045, higher than the state average of 956, indicating a positive trend towards gender equality.
Of the total population, 408 were engaged in work activities, with 98.77% of workers describing their work as Main Work (Employment or Earning more than 6 Months), and 1.23% involved in Marginal activity providing livelihood for less than 6 months. Of the 408 workers engaged in Main Work, 23 were cultivators (owner or co-owner) while 130 were agricultural laborers.
Amidst the challenges facing Surjapur, Promise Worldwide and Promise Kolkata Charitable Trust have been working tirelessly to provide basic education to the community's children through remote cyber learning delivered by successful professionals. With 30 students from extremely poor backgrounds, Promise is making a significant difference in the lives of young people in Surjapur and offering hope for a brighter future.
